Patrick, I came across a great book you would really enjoy. It's called Why Him, Why Her and it's published by an anthropologist Helen Fisher. It essentially categories humans into four personality groups: Director, Negotiator, Builder, and Explorer. She bases her studies on our biological makeup, hormones, and brain chemicals that are most predominant in our bodies. We show traits of all four personality types, a well rounded person will show all four equally, but she believes we easily gravitate towards two of the personality types predominately.

Watch her speak here on TED: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-ewvCNguug

Read her book, take her test, and be amused for a while!
